Form 3-4 Science Curriculum (gr. 7-9)

SMH’s Form 3-4 Living Science Guides (grades 7-9) will provide your students with a strong foundation in the general and physical sciences. They are geared to be completed by your student alone, with teacher assistance and accountability given as needed. If your child has not already fallen in love with science, now is the time to begin applying Charlotte Mason’s natural way to learn this subject.

Suggested Two Year Plan

  • Biology or Botany (1 day a week, all year, both years)
  • Other science topics taken term by term (3 days a week, possible rotation below)
Grade All Year Term 1 Term 2 Term 3
7 Biology Chemistry Weather Physics
8 Botany Astronomy Tech & Eng Geology

Sample Weekly Schedule
Biology will continue term after term, but chemistry would be replaced by another subject next term. This schedule will allow you to focus your attention and your experiments on just two subjects each term.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

Notes

  • If you need to consider the reading level of the books, please note that the three easiest are Chemistry, Geology, and Physics. The hardest is Astronomy.
  • If you would like to consider other Scheduling possibilities including Charlotte Mason’s own plan or a more traditional school plan read Scheduling High School Science.
  • For more information about biology through the years, read High School Biology Notes.
  • Sample Student Notebooks:  Science Notebooks & Nature Notebooks
  • When the Form 3-4 guides contain religious material, a secular version is offered for purchase. For more information, read the article Secular Living Science Curriculum.

F3-4 Astronomy

In this Form 3-4 study guide, students will be introduced to the principles and tools of the study of astronomy. Included is an overview of our solar system, the sun, the planets, and comets. Students will learn about the sun’s convection currents, sunspots, solar flares, solar winds, and the auroras they create. They will learn how distant planets are studied and what has been discovered about their rotation, composition, atmosphere, moons, and rings.

F3-4 Biology

In this survey of biology, students will be introduced to the principles and tools of biological study, food webs, life processes, some anatomy, adaptation, natural selection, extinction, cell theory, simple genetics, and reproduction.

F3-4 Botany

In this Form 3-4 study guide, students will study plants physiology, including their structure, the way they function, some classification, and sensitivity.

F3-4 Chemistry

In this Form 3-4 study guide, students will learn about the development of modern chemistry, the formation of the periodic table, the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, and balancing chemical reactions.

F3-4 Electronics

In this Form 3-4 (grades 7-9) abbreviated study guide, students will learn about simple circuits and electricity.

F3-4 Geology

In this Form 3-4 (grades 7-9) study guide, students will study earth’s materials and systems, including the composition, structure, physical properties, and history of the earth.

F3-4 Physics

In this Form 3-4 study guide, students will learn about the universal laws of science, including those for liquids and gases, matter and energy, and motion and waves.

F3-4 Weather
